Spanish vocabulary - The "Feria" in Seville

Updated: Apr 10

In this post you will learn specific Spanish vocabulary about the "Feria de Abril" in Seville. It is both an exercise in reading comprehension and ... imagination. This post is designed

to learn Spanish in a fun way. At the end, you will find some exercises.

The "Feria de Abril"of 2022 is over (although it was in May). The "Feria de Abril" is the typical Seville's festival, which is celebrated in one of the times of the year when the weather is better and the city is more beautiful.

It takes place in a large space dedicated to it, which is colloquially called "the real de la Feria". In this space there are streets named after bullfighters and, along them, some meeting places made of wood and canvas, which are called "casetas", each with a number (There are more than 1,000!).

The "Feria" has a monumental entrance that is designed differently each year and is known as "la portada".

It starts at 12:00 on a Saturday night. That night is called "noche del alumbrao" or "noche del pescaíto", since the lighting of the fairgrounds is inaugurated and a typical dinner is taken in which the base is fried fish. "Alumbrao" (lighting) and "pescaíto" (little fish) are written as we Andalusians usually speak. It ends the following Saturday night with fireworks ("los fuegos").

At the "Feria", people drink with friends, sing and dance, usually a traditional Andalusian dance known as "sevillanas". Rumbas are also danced. And that is done in the "casetas", but also in the streets of the "real". If you come to Seville and you don't know how to dance "sevillanas", don't worry, just dance, they will help you.

Many women wear the typical costume, called "traje de flamenca" which stands out for its colorfulness, its "volantes" and its sensuality. The "traje de flamanca" is completed with a small shawl with bangs, which is called "mantoncillo".

Some men also wear the typical costume (called "vestir de corto"), especially if they ride horses. They also wear a big hat called "sombrero de ala ancha" (wide-brimmed hat).

There are two different atmospheres. Until 7 p.m. people stroll through the streets on horseback and in carriages, which is called "paseo de caballos" (horse parade). At the end of the afternoon, and during the night and early morning, the streets are taken over by foreigners and tourists who go from "caseta" to "caseta" visiting friends, with the streets lit by "farolillos" (small lanterns).

The typical drink is the "rebujito" which is a combination of an Andalusian wine, "manzanilla", and Seven Up or Sprite. Manzanilla is also drunk alone, very cold.

If you do not know the Fair, you cannot miss it.
