The flamenco dress

The flamenco dress ("Traje de flamenca" or "vestido de flamenca") is a very popular costume for the fiestas in the Andalusian cities. It is also worn by flamenco performers, especially dancers (called "bailaoras").

Its origin dates back to the middle of the 19th century, when it was used as a costume, although more simplified, by the popular classes. Since then it has been in continuous evolution, with designers, manufacturers and fashion shows specialising in what is known as "flamenco fashion"

In this post we will give you the keys to look like a real flamenca.

Let's start with the hairstyle. The most traditional hairstyle is to gather your hair with the help of "peinetas" and "peinecillos" and put a big flower on top, but obviously there are other options.

Unos complementos importantes son los pendientes o zarcillos. Tradicionalmente tienen forma de aro no concéntrico o también de lágrima, pero como en el caso anterior hay muchas opciones, lo importante es que combinen con los otros elementos.

The "mantoncillo" covers the shoulders and is worn at the front. It is an essential accessory of triangular shape with long fringes. There are simple ones and others with embroidered flowers.

And finally the suit or the dress itself where there are many options.

  • The general shape of the dress is called the "hechura": where the cut of the hips, the shape of the neckline of the chest and the back, the type of sleeves...

  • All dresses have ruffles on the skirt as well as on the sleeves. The number of ruffles and their shape is very variable.

  • Another option are plain and printed colours. Fabrics with polka dot prints are very popular.

As you can see in the following image, the combinations are endless.
